I'm new to this tribe and I'm thinking about going to school for this trade. I want to know what type of jobs you folks have, how easy was it to find work after school, were you assistants, how do you advertise, are any of you on your own and how did you do that, etc.

I have some really great dread extensions in my hair right now (orange, red, pink) and I'm doing some photos of my fire dancing (fans, fingers), so the more dramatic, the better. Style of the dress would be more tribal-bellydance sort of aesthetic. See some of my profile's pics to get an idea of my hair right now, and some fire pics.

I'm looking for somebody who would like to do some more dramatic make-up, would like to experiment or try something that's a little out of the ordinary.

My name is chuck / aka Dyna-lite. I am an In-house photographer for a very very large
company by day. I also have a pretty lucrative freelance biz which is at the stage where I want to start promoting it heavily. I usually have 5 to 6 jobs a month (mostly editorial, fashion or personal assignments) that require the talents of a make-up artist. The rates I pay are $100-$250 cash for usually 2 to 4 hours work on location or in studio. Of course, I am always open to negotiation.

Is there anyone of the 400+ members on this Tribe that might be interested in some study freelance work? I really need folks I can go to on a regular basis instead of having to post *make-up artist needed* threads every two weeks on all usual websites Of course, I will share all work with you for portfolio/ website purposes unless otherwise stated by the client.

I tried here once before. I'm hoping this time i’ll have better luck.

So, who's interested?

Oh yeah...two jobs are scheduled for beginning of April

Hey! I publish a bellydance magazine and am looking for people who can write about makeup. I'm looking for:

1. New makeup on the market
2. Reviews
3. Makeup application instruction

Of course I'll need images as well. So if it's a review of specific products, or new makeup on the market, then I can purchase them and do a shoot w/my photographer. If it's makeup application you're writing about, I'll either need good illustrations or photos of the process. One option I saw (and liked) was taking a photo of the final look and providing illustrations (and text) on how it was achieved.

To give you an idea of where we're at right now, we had a writer come up with a piece on the historical context of eyeliner. Then she wrote a sidebar about taking care of your eyes (throwing away old product, watching out for khol mixtures from overseas, etc.). Then we had a selection of about twelve waterproof eyeliners, from companies from Smashbox to Rimmel, that bellydancers recommend, where to find them, price, plusses and minuses of each. Then had a photo session for all those products.

Our readers range from 20 - 50 years old, so the audience varies widely. Most of our readers are over 30. So makeup that doesn't emphsize wrinkles is good, but it must be resiliant because dancers sweat. A few other considerations include audiences that are close (so no crazy dramatic 'stage' makeup), audiences that are far (staged performances), and the general need to educate about makeup for nightwear (rather than daywear) without adding years onto her face. Makeup that settles into lines is always a problem.

We're on a budget, but contact me with your rates and background. Right now I'm looking at an April 5th deadline.

I may have left something out (because I'm a bit tired at the moment) so don't hesitate to contact me.

What are recommendations and/or suggestions as far as schooling and obtaining knowledge in this field?

Any personal dos or don’ts?

What is it like out in “the field?”
Is job placement plentiful?
Are any jobs relating to this field dependable and consistent (i.e. 9-5 Monday through Friday) or is it more of a contractor scenario (gigs for months at a time and then dry spells)?

I have heard tell that the Special Effects industry is slowly disappearing and jobs are going over seas, is this more rumor then fact?

Is it best to lean more toward the beauty/photography/t.v aspects of this profession rather then special effects and film?

Is it best to have equal amounts of knowledge in all categories? Jack-of-all-Trades?

I do have performance education that I am working on that I do not see “bowing out” of the picture once I delve into this education. Do I need all my focus and attention to be concentrated on this after my schooling in complete, if I intend to make anything of it? Is it possible to make it in this field without hitting promotion head on and constantly? Is it possible to make an enjoyable living out of this education while splitting my energy, time, and love between this and my continuing performance education?

This is it for now but I am sure I will come across more soon!
Thanks so much for any and all opinions!

I have never been that sick in my life!! At any rate we are shooting a scene this coming weekend in Las cruces for the farmhouse scene. If you remember this is the one where the daughter of the farmer does battle with the zombies and loses. This will also involove the zombie dog Chigger puppet.I am going to collect his fur today and he should be finished today or tommorow. I will also be doing the final storyboarding for the scene as well. I leave thursday the 30th for Las Cruces. The shooting however is on December 2 and 3. If you can make it, you will have to find a place to stay. I am staying with the farmers at the farmhouse. We have zombies down there already. Stephen Eckles willl be going down and staying in a hotel to help us out and to be a zombie. If you can make it, let me know now so that I know who will be crewing and I will also know how many zombies we have available. This is not short notice for it has been stated before and it is also on our Yahoo group calendar. What we need in Cruces is crew and zombies. Let me know. Well, I am off to go buy fur. I am in a bellydance troupe and most of my troupe mates are older ladies and always want me to do their makeup. They want the smokey bedroom eyes and it just never looks right on them. Any tips on doing this kind of stage makeup on people with loose skin and smaller eyelids would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Hi everyone,

I am looking to become a makeup artist. I spent some time researching various schools and went down to LA last week to check some of them out. (I live in Oakland.)

Most of the places I saw were really expensive and some seemed to me to be amazingly rinky-dink. It seems to me that the best approach for me is to learn all I can on my own, practice a lot, and start to bulid up a portfolio. This will allow me to find out if I can really do this without blowing my savings (and having to move to LA for weeks on end as well - I want to work up here.)

I am interested in beauty/glamour makeup, and have been thinking of various possibilities for working in that area, such as brides (of course) as well as dancers, fashion and fetish photography, and giving private lessons to people who want to learn how to do their own makeup better.

I've been studying Kevyn Aucoin's books and practicing on myself and my friends. I'd like to know if there are any other books that any of you recommend, and also what you would suggest I have in my kit for when I start working more on other people - stuff like, how many shades of foundation/concealer to have etc. I have a bunch of makeup (of course) but its mostly stuff I bought because I like it, not necessarily thinking about putting a kit together.

Or maybe you didn't think you'd do a good enough job painting someone else?
Maybe you're already familiar with Deviant Liquid Latex but would like to learn advanced application techniques for photo shoots, costuming, special effects, or other creative uses? Or, maybe you already love wearing or painting Liquid Latex and have been looking for a chance to get together with others to play with the fantastic rubber "Paint On Clothing"? You'll use our latex, our brushes, our finishing products during the workshop... and we'll even clean up after you!

Then, at the end of the night, we'll give you a bag-load of new, sealed products to take home with you to use for your next sexy party, craft project, costuming idea or more! Our first couple of events will be general interest, light hearted and fun, focusing on the diverse application and techniques for the products.

Hi, I am not a make-up artist so sorry to bumble into your tribe... I had a question that has been on my mind for over a decade and I thought you might be able to help me... You know that red red color lipstic taht can be seen in movies and in comercials and then when I go out and try to find anything that color it just can't be found? The ones I find are all too orange, or too purple or too brown to be that color that I call in my mind celeb red. I would save up and pay $100/stick for that color if I could ever find it. Soo, is there some company that makeup artists have access to or know about that the regular folks like me don't, or is it a matter of mixing shades to get the right color, or is this color I think I see really not real, and it is all just in my mind. Thank you very much :)

i'm new-ish to this industry, and am looking to get my toes/feet in the door, and maybe even get some discounts on makeup and tools.

i've been looking to see where i'd like to work on a part-time basis, that would provide me with opportunities to play with makeup (which i've done before as an image consultant) and *discounts*. it seems as though the higher end dept stores are much more of a commitment in that one has to dress waaay up. this is not so much my "bag." i'd like to work in an environment that is a little/a lot more relaxed.

which brings me to my questions:

does anyone here work for Sephora? has anyone here worked for them? what was/is that experience like? do you have any suggestions/tips/advice on whether or not this might be a good way to get my foot in the proverbial door and get access to discounts? how difficult is it to get a job with them? do they hire part-time employees?

anyone? anyone? :)

thank you...

I live in South San Francisco and I really want to get my cosmetology liscence, particularly interested in hair and makeup. I droped into Hilltop Beauty School in Daly City and it seems like a pretty average school, I picked up a brochure and I talked to a representative and she said they taught a basic curriculum to get a cosmetology liscence. The brochure also stated that the curriculum for beauty schools were standardized by the state. The plus side to this school is that you put in a certain # of hours and it can work around your scheduel, there are no semester dates to wait for, and they have financial aid, which is the most important factor for me.

My main concerne is that I may not be getting the exposure to the trends or the more adventurous things I'de be interested in learning about in the beauty industry, I mean Im not going to get a liscence just so I can work at supercuts.

So if you guys have any info, let me know. Would Zenzi's or Ms Marty's be any better, and Do they have financial aid?

Photography is a hobby for me, but has been a passion for 20 years. I have mostly worked with still lifes, and landscapes up to this point, but am looking to branch out and try something new.

For models I would like to start with TFP/CDs. Shoots would be fashion/portrait based. Other people will be present (i.e. makeup artist, assistant, etc…) at the shoot.

For a makeup artist: I am looking for someone who does makeup for a sideline, or is just leaving cosmetology school. My budget is limited, but all (worthwhile) photos will be posted on the web, with full credit to all involved.

This is a great opportunity to build your portfolio, and for me to do the same.

FREE PHOTOS for SanFran Bay Area Models, Make-up Artists, & Fashion Designers

---------------------

I worked as a portrait, fashion, and commercial (advertising) photographer in my early 20s - using Nikon, Hasselblad and Sinar 4x5 and 8x10 cameras; then I switched careers.

I've good technical skills with the camera and Photoshop; since I'm now re-entering the photo world on a part-time basis -- I need to update my portfolio with some new faces, styles and settings. I enjoy creating beautiful, evocative images, whether they're of nature or women. I'm seeking a few select models who are comfortable in front of the camera, can strike a pose without excess direction, and want to expand their portfolios. I work in a professional yet relaxed manner, collaborating with the model to create images that are flattering, tasteful, and pleasing to both the model and the viewer. I want to make you look your best and enjoy our shoot.

I'm also looking for that "one special model" with whom I might work collaboratively over a period of time, capturing a wide variety of poses, fashions, hairstyles, and locations to create a "one model over time" gallery show or coffee-table book.

Here's my offer: I may be willing to work with you on a TFP/CD basis (that means we both work for "free" and you get the resulting photos for your portfolio; TFP means "time for prints" or "trade for prints" the /CD means "photos on a CD" or in other electronic format, as JPG images). In addition, if you have some interesting ideas on co-operative photo projects that we'd collaborate on, I'd be willing to share the copyright & profits.

Our initial photo shoot would likely be sometime between 8am-4pm Mon-Fri depending on our schedules. If you have a location shoot in mind that requires an evening or weekend schedule, let's discuss it. You may bring a girlfriend/escort/stylist to any shoot with prior notification.

I'm in central Marin County, just 25 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

I want to create some interesting photos using dramatic makeup, costumes, lighting or unusual juxtaposition of model/props/setting -- so if you've got some out-of-the-ordinary ideas, let's talk!

I work using 35mm digital cameras and have professional studio strobe lighting. We can do interior or outdoor location shoots -- and if there's a particular shot you want to add to your portfolio I'm open to your requests and suggestions.

Be sure to check out my photo website: http://foto.sharrow.com/glamour

or a just-started PhotoBlog:

I found this cool eastern/cleopatra-looking metal necklace at the gem show this weekend and thought I'd revolve my costume around it. it's a thick choker that fans out about 3inches onto the chest.

thought I'd pair it with this ankle-length, metallic-looking tank dress (like chainmail metallic, not shiny). it's slit up the side so I thought I'd wear my motorcycle boots and go kinda Xena-archeangel-esque. maybe some bands of silver body paint on my arms. maybe get some unique wings.

any suggestions on the makeup & hair?

here's some pics to give you an idea of what I've got to work with hair/face-wise:

I was thinking of doing something somewhere between this:
http://tucson.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=14&currentoffset=79&parentid=76f0d4fd-d3e1-4f50-9b8e-07afe015eaaa&sortby&rows&r=10382
and this:
http://tucson.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=14&currentoffset=82&parentid=76f0d4fd-d3e1-4f50-9b8e-07afe015eaaa&sortby&rows&r=10382

...something simple, not too elaborate. maybe egyptian-esque around the eyes. maybe using little bits of silver paint to give a tribal effect.

if anyone has pics (your own, magazines, fashion, etc) that they'd like to share for inspiration, that's welcome too. :)

MODEL & PHOTOGRAPHERS NETWORK PARTY - FRI DEC 10th - 7:00pm

Bay Area Models...please join us at the next Model & Photographer party in San Jose...Fri 12/10!!! These parties are an outstanding opportunity to expand your network of industry contacts, as well as have a great evening. We had around 40 people at the last party, several of them clients looking for models to hire for future modeling projects. Some of the areas best photographers were there to work with the models...all for free. My shooting area was busy all night long with the models and photographers enjoying something they simply do not have a chance to experience anywhere else. Of course, experienced photographers are welcome too.

If you did not make the last party...well, then lets make sure you make it to the next one on Fri, Dec 10th at 7:00pm. Here is a link with some additional information...

http://www.bobsmodelhangout.com/

The party is a relaxed, fun atmosphere...with no pressure on the models. If you want to shoot with someone, that is totally up to you. Everyone is there for the same reason, to meet people in the model photography world and have a fun evening. These parties are highly controlled to make sure only people with a real interest in this industry attend.

I am pleased to have the lovely and highly experienced Julia at the next party to help newer models with any information, or help they may need about modeling. She is the beautiful Cover Model on the Hangout website. This is a outstanding opportunity for anyone new to sit and talk with her about any issues that you may have.

For more information, directions and a personal invitation please contact me directly. The party is free, just bring your own beverage, but I do highly encourage you to join the Yahoo group listed below to receive party information on a regular basis.

See you at the Hangout!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this tribe. I am looking to make connections with artists and fashion designers of all types who are already in business for themselves (with their own customers), and can provide samples for us to market with.

We are (quietly) starting the launch of Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners, which has been in development for seven years by Creative Endeavors Consulting Company. Our mission statement:

Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners is comprised of entrepreneurial-minded individuals and partner companies with the vision, problem solving, and experienced leadership ability needed to bring together the worlds of creative and business.

We are looking to form Alliances with artists in various mediums. Their creativity and ours will be utilized in the development of projects and product lines. The type of people we are looking for are clothing and jewelry designers, painters, sculptures, fashion illustrators, entertainers (for special events), photographers (for photo shoots), etc. Right now I am only interested in people/companies in California to ease into things. Later we will expand our search nationwide.

Please understand this is *not* a situation where we take whatever the artist has made and go look for markets to sell it to. We are creating markets, and inviting artists that have aligned with us into deals. Please also understand that we do not want to be the artist's primary form of income, which is why we want to work with already established businesses.

For consideration, please send an email to rp@cecpartners.com with the subject "Artist Search: [fill in what you do]." In the email, please provide your contact info (location!), company info, a website link, bio, and anything you can think of that would help us to decide whether we could work with you.

Lastly, please understand if I can't respond immediately. We know there is a tremendous need in the market for artist representation. I am opening the door just a crack on Tribe to see who is out there. We will be working as fast as we can to sort through emails and get back to people, but it will take some time to get things rolling. Even if we can't use your particular talent right away, we will keep you on file for future consideration, if it makes sense for our needs.

Regards,
Rebekah
